Partnerships

When we started HEM, we spent a great deal of our time at the Capitol. You might remember the furlough days of 2009, and the enormous pressure that ordinary moms and dads had to put on Government just to keep their children in school. In 2009, Hawaii’s children had the lowest number of school days in the nation. That’s not something any of us wanted to see happen again. So, we decided that we’d build on relationships we created with educators and legislators, and become bridge builders for other parents. Hopefully, by becoming a HEM friend, you’ll find information you need when you need it , and you’ll also find that our relationships now go beyond education and right into the community. Because at HEM, we believe that education is a job for the entire community; well educated children build strong communities in which to live, and strong communities have great schools.

Our HEM partnerships are with groups already making a difference in the community. Many of our partners are groups dedicated to making changes in public schools ( PPS, TLC and Community Helping Schools, OPS), others are strong groups that take a wider view of community (Kanu Hawaii, Kokua Foundation, FACE) and yet others are leaders in community growth and enhancement like the Castle Foundation.

HEM is also a member of Hui for Excellence in Education, He’e, a newly formed education coalition whose mission is to promote a child-centered and strength-based public education system in which families, communities and schools are valued and empowered to help every student succeed.

Please explore these pages and find out more about our partners. With think in doing so you’ll also find out more about HEM.
